As a former athlete in both high school and college, I always thought I had a handle on what kind of weight lifting program would yield me the greatest results. My wife’s pleadings with me to work with a trainer at Sport + Field were always met with the proverbial, “Honey, I know what I’m doing. I’ve been lifting weights for several years with good results. What is the trainer going to tell me; stand on a ball and do curls with dumbbells? After hearing her tell me about the new types of exercises she was doing with her new trainer, David Van der Shuur, I decided to show her once and for all that the trainer would be a total waste of time for me.

Well, I quickly learned that the only one wasting his time was me with my mundane, routine and non-challenging workouts I had been doing on my own. David took me through the ranges of motion for each exercise and how to focus on each muscle group by slowing down the pace of my reps. In addition, his workouts were done with a purpose in mind to compliment certain muscle groups and to ensure all parts of the body were challenged during the week while avoiding those amateur injuries too often occurring when form is exchanged for reps or higher weights. The workouts, which change monthly in order to keep things fresh and to maintain my motivation, along with a comprehensive nutrition plan have given me visible results in such a short amount of time. I feel better and I have more energy to help me accomplish my tasks at work and at home. I would highly recommend working out with a trainer, even if it is for just a couple of sessions, to ensure you are correctly performing the exercises to avoid injury, to give purpose to your choice of exercises and to maintain a healthy nutritional lifestyle. So, if you are one of those old college jocks who think a trainer is a waste of time or someone looking to begin a weight training program, begin with the end in mind and understand that a trainer can provide a service that will accelerate your progress and quickly get you on the path of achieving your individual goals. I am well on my way thanks to David!
